Hibernian v Aberdeen - Match Report

Aberdeen yet again messed up and squandered a good chance to progress to the next round. Over 3,500 fans travelled down to Edinburgh for the cup tie and were left let down and despondant by the end of the game. Aberdeen crash out of the cup and Hibernian go through to the next round.

The first half proved to be one of the worst halves of football I have ever witnessed as there was no creativity or urgency from either sides. Out of nothing Maybury for Hibs stormed forward unattended and was allowed to run and run until he let a shot rip that went way wide of Langfields goal. The only chance of the half for the dons fell into the feet of Clark Robertson, and swiped at it with his right foot, sending the ball into row Z.

The second half however proved to be more fruitfull as Leigh Griffiths, who was constantly being taunted by the Aberdeen supporters throughout the whole game, got the first shot on target. In the 49th minute the deadlock was broken. Like Maybury, Deegan drove at the Aberdeen defence as nobody closed him down and unleashed a shot from 30 yards that sailed past Langfield, hit the underside of the bar and nestled in the net. A spectacular goal from nothing. Aberdeen were rocked and almost found themselves two down as Griffiths cut in from the right and had a curling effort on goal, Langfield parried out but the second shot by McGivern was only blasted over the bar. Griffiths moments later then attempted an overhead kick that was well held by the Dons keeper. Anderson knew Aberdeen were on the backfoot and tried to lead by example by driving in a shot at Ben Williams goal, but the shot was only turned away for a corner. The Dons were coming into the match again and Vernon had a great chance after coming off the subs bench to draw the scores level, but could only head into the Hibs keepers hands. Pawlett then weaved his way into the box and fired in a shot only to be saved once again by Williams. Aberdeen were piling the pressure on, in their search to look for an equaliser, Hayes ran into the box and was upended by James McPake, Iain Brines the referee pointed to the spot. It was a surprise when Vernon stepped up to the spot, but he missed leaving the Aberdeen fans raging. For the rest of the game Aberdeen huffed and puffed but couldn't find a breakthrough meaning Hibs are into the next round to play Kilmarnock away. The result leaves Aberdeen still looking for a victory this year.
