Remember the 9-0 defeat by Celtic under the reign of Mark McGhee? That type of scoreline looked on the cards again as Commons slotted home after 10 seconds. A long ball up the park directly from kick off came to Hooper who flicked on with his head to Stokes. Stokes took down the ball and saw the run of Commons to the wide left of the box and played him in. Langfield came rushing out but Commons coolly slotted passed him to give Celtic the perfect start. However Aberdeen did not look like capitulating and did not let their heads go down. They got their foot on the ball and were playing really nice football. Rae played Magennis through on goal, but he was closed down by two Celtic players either side of him, but took him down inside the Celtic box, nothing was given. A few more Celtic long shots came Langfields way who dealt with them comfortably. Just before half time Jack picked up the ball wide left, deep in to the Celtic half and produced a magnificent curling cross into the box that picked out Scott Vernon. He headed wide, he should have done better. But right on the stroke of half time and the last attack of the half, Magennis found himself through on goal after a mistake by Wilson. The angle was tight so he chose not to shoot, but to cut back to Vernon he slotted home and made amends for his earlier miss.
The second half was end to end and action packed, however it was Aberdeen that came out the traps the fastest. In the 53rd minute Magennis once again was through on goal after an excellent pass by Rae. He drove the shot at goal with his left foot, and the shot wriggled under Fraser Forster and Aberdeen now lead 1-2. Celtic tried to retaliate but could not muster anything of great importance.Seven minutes later Aberdeen found themselves in dreamland as they extend their lead to 1-3. After a corner, the ball fell to Rae who struck a sweet shot that looked destined to go in, however Magennis got a touch and made sure of it. Cue the Celtic onslaught. Celtic shots rained down on Lanfields goal, left, right and Centre, and after several scrambles in the Dons box Celtic snatched a goal back. After a mad scramble in the box the ball popped out to Mulgrew ho lashed at it. The ball took a wicked deflection off of Anderson and looped over Langfield to nestle in the net 2-3. With 5 minutes to hang on Aberdeen were hanging by a thread, however that thread snapped when Efe Ambrose headed fantastically at goal, the ball was cleared but in fell nicely to Hooper who nodded in to draw the scores level. Finally the sickener for Aberdeen as Celtic pulled ahead with the last kick of the ball. What made it worse was the goal came from a free kick that should never have been. The ball was not cleared by the Aberdeen defence and it sat up for Samaras who over head kicked it into the far corner of the net. The Aberdeen players looked like they had just lost a cup final in disarray and stunned.
Aberdeen came away with nothing when really they deserved all three points. We need to win our next to games to finish top six now, another loss and it's another bottom six finish for us.
