Aberdeen v Kilmarnock Match Report

Aberdeen secured only their third win of the year to see them leap above Kilmarnock to seventh place in the league table. Although the scoreline shows a fairly even match that Aberdeen just managed to win, it was anything but. Aberdeen dominated the match and will rue the chances they missed to put the match to bed well before the 90 minutes were up. All in all a good victory for the Dons.

The match didn't take long to buzz into life, and it was Aberdeen's main man McGinn who opened the scoring after only four minutes on the clock. Anderson played a neat ball down the left wing, to which McGinn latched onto. He drove at Kilmarnock's right back Barbour and cut inside by flicking the ball through the Kilmarnock defender's legs, leaving him for dead. McGinn then composed himself for the shot and expertly curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. Another superb solo effort from McGinn, showing why he has been nominated for PFA player of the year. Ten minutes later Kilmarnock looked to get themslves back into the match through young Johnston. He fired in at the Dons goal, but Langfield managed to push the ball away to safety. Cutting edge action in the first half was not really there and the match didn't spark into life how the fans had expected it to, especially after Niall McGinn's beauty of a goal.

The second half proved more eventful and Aberdeen started it brightly. After Shaughnessy twisted and turned in the box beating a few men, the ball broke to McGinn who fired in a low shot at goal, however the shot was to close to Kilmarnock keeper Cammy Bell who did well to gather. Johnston the young winger looks a real good prospect for Kilmarnock and after a fantastic curling ball out wide by the youngster, kilmarnock whipped the ball into the box, Boyd was unluck not to score with his header, but in the end did not trouble the Aberdeen goal. Shaughnessy produced a long throw in that found itself to McGinn unmarked in the 18 yard box, but somehow he fired wide. A real missed oppertunity for Aberdeen and McGinn knew it as he held his head in his hands. Soon after Hayes troubled Bell with a low curling shot, the Killie keeper took two shots to eventually smother the ball from the incoming Dons players looking to tap home. Magennis then took to the limelight in the remaining ten minutes as first he was in tons of space with nobody around him inside the box. He looked to take the ball falling from the sky on the volley but smashed it into the ground taking all the pace off of the shot and Cammy Bell gathered easily. Finally Magennis was through on goal and rounded the keeper albeit with a heavy touch, Bell looked to foul the striker but he stayed on his feet but could not catch the ball in time to slot home.

Derek McInnes will have been pleased with his sides performance as Aberdeen showed a lot of fight and creativity, however they do not have that magic touch when it comes to finishing their chances. McInnes will be pleased to get his first home victory in only oine attempt. So far so good.
