BBC Alba to Show Gothenburg 1983

BBC Alba will be broadcasting a brand new documentary film, Gothenburg 83,  which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the incredible season where Aberdeen defeated Sion, Dinamo Tirana, Lech Poznan, Bayern Munich and Waterschei in a stunning European Cup Winners Cup run saw us conquer the might of Alfredo di Stefano’s Real Madrid in the final in Gothenburg on 11 May 1983.
The season has been described as a fairytale, and who better to tell that story than the players, management team and fans that made the narrative possible. PupleTV has travelled up and down the country, and to the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, capturing the precious memories of those that took part in the game, as well as those who travelled by plane and ferry to support Aberdeen on their European adventure.
Gothenburg ’83 includes personal testimonies of, in particular, two distinguished Scottish footballing legends: the Aberdeen FC manager at the helm at the time of the European success, current Manchester United manager and one of the most respected figures in world football, Sir Alex Ferguson; and the former Aberdeen FC midfielder and current Scotland National Team Manager, Gordon Strachan.
Filmed over the course of four weeks, the one-hour must-see film for BBC ALBA is presented by sport broadcaster and UEFA correspondent for Scotland, Alex O’Henley.
The amazing journey of a provincial football club from the north east coast of Scotland that conquered Europe is captured in exclusive interviews, entertaining anecdotes from behind the scenes and archive footage of the stunning events that led up to that legendary, rainy night in Gothenburg.
Gothenburg ’83 will be transmitted on BBC Alba on Thursday 9 May at 9pm with a second chance to view on Saturday 11 May at 10pm.
