The first chance of the game resulted in the first ever SPFL goal. Ryan Jack found the ball at his feet and poked the ball to Zola who was coming back from offside in the box, Zola shrugged off his marker turned superbly and got the shot away. Craig Sampson the Killie keeper did well to save but could only parry th ball and Johnny Hayes latched on to it and squeezed the ball in between the kilmarnock defender and the post. Aberdeen had started brilliantly and it looked like the pressure would result in a second goal as Hayes fired a cross in and on the turn McGinn looked to poke the ball into the corner of the net but was denied by a super save by the Kilmarnock keeper. Kilmarnock looked to respond through a free kick at the other end. As the Dons defence was sleeping the free kick was quickly taken and McKenzie found himself in space and got the shot away in time but pulled it wide. Langfield went crazy at the Aberdeen defence.
Aberdeen came firing out the traps in the second half and the man that had been running everything in the centre of the park Willo Flood, he was rewarded with a goal. Johnny Hayes clipped a magnificent ball in from the wide left and Willo Flood got in front of his man from a late run and glanced the header into the back of the net. After the match Willo said he had never scored a header since he was 12! Soon after more great play by Willo Flood as he used pace and strength to battle through the midfield and play a through ball to McGinn who cut back for Magennis about 12 yards out, the striker tried to calmly side foot the ball into the corner of the net but instead put the ball wide. A glorious opportunity to seal the game. Aberdeen were punished for missed opportunities as McKenzie went on a dazzling run on the Kilmarnock right wing and then squared the ball to Kris Boyd who then curled the ball into the net leaving Langfield without a chance. Boyd who was being taunted by the Dons fans responded with a unique celebration that resulted in the former Rangers player receiving a yellow card. Johnny Hayes who seemed up for the match then went on another surging run and passed the ball to McGinn in the box before being blatantly taken out by new Killie signing Darren Barr, a clear penalty for the Dons but was not given. Magennis was in the limelight again as Robson played a wonerful ball through to set Magennis one on one with the keeper, however a poor touch forced him to try and take the ball round the keeper, but the Kilmarnock defenders were quick enough to get back and smother the effort. Magennis should have had two goals now, instead he had none. Another chance came and went for Aberdeen from a Barry Robson Corner, Shaughnessy headed onto the underside of the bar and Kilmarnock were able to clear. Kilmarnock looked sure to draw level when Boyd found himself in a pocket of space in the box but pulled his shot wide letting the Aberdeen defence out of jail for poor marking and closing down. McGinn had one more chance to score before the game was up after Flood had layed the ball on a plate to McGinn just outside the six yard box. McGinn got his feet in a mess and was undecided how to hit the shot so instead fluffed it and the ball dribbled out of play.
