A Collection Of Causes At Fault For Dons Defeat

Aberdeen were defeated by three goals to one by a very average Hearts side that will (mark my words) struggle to stay in the Premiership despite the result today. The game was not handled by the referee at all well today. Crucial decisions and events went against us at important times in the match and that is what led to the downfall. if you could call it that.

Aberdeen were in total domination and were creating chance after chance. It was only a matter of time before they opened the scoring. However one good opportunity did come the way of Hearts but Langfield made a good save as the ball was blasted at him by Stevenson. Hamill was to say the least getting the Dons fans on his back recklessly throwing himself into challenges all over the park. His next looked almost a certain penalty however for some reason the referee did not give it. Pawlett picked up the ball and drove through the Hearts defence into the box. In came Hamill clipping the wingers heels and off he went with the ball. It would have been a free-kick so how was it not a penalty?

Aberdeen did get their goal on twenty five minutes though. Robson whipped in a tremendous corner, and the ball fell to McGinn in the box who rifled past MacDonald on the half volley, getting his third goal in a week. From their on in it was just total Dons dominance. Robson was booked harshly for a handball that he could do nothing to get out the way of, this would later prove to be costly. The most contentious moment of the match came when Hector fired in a shot at goal past MacDonald but was then cleared off the line by McGowan but he used his hand. Everyone inside the stadium was incensed it was a clear penalty and red card, but nothing was given. The referee was becoming beyond a joke at this point. Then on forty minutes Aberdeen did get their penalty. McGinn beat a man down on the left wing and looked to cross the ball but McGhee jumped up and the ball hit him in the back. Somehow the referee decided to award a penalty. He obviously knew he had made a mistake for the previous decision as he was standing directly next to the incident, but this couldn't make up for it as no red card could be issued. McGinn stepped up and looked to tuck the ball away bottom right hand corner, but MacDonald made a good save to deny him. Aberdeen would be kicking themselves going in at half time only a goal up, it was one of the most comfortable halves the Dons have played all season.

Then it all changed though in the second half. On around fifty five minutes Hearts looked to break away and Holt stepped across Robson on the halfway line. Robson looked to try and get out of the way but Holt tripped over his feet. The referee deemed this to be a second yellow card and he was shown a red card. From there on the balance of the game had switched. Hearts sensed that they could get back into the game and that they did and more. However it was Vernon who got the next best chance of the game. Hayes drove down the left wing and chipped in a cross, Vernon looked to loop it over the Hearts keeper into the net but he made a good save to deny him. Hearts' equaliser was more shocking refereeing, the freekick was never a freekick in the first place and when Wilson knocked the ball on Walker was in an offside position. Aberdeen once again found themselves on the wrong side of a poor decision.

Aberdeen were raging with the game as a whole and looked to turn that disappointment into joy when Vernon flicked on a cross at the front post which dribbled along the line but would not go in. Heartbreaking stuff for the Dons. Hearts then took the lead through a Paterson tap in. Walker made a dribbling run up the wing and poor defending from Hector allowed him to get to the bi-line and cut the ball back to Paterson who tapped in. Aberdeen were giving it ll they could to try and get an equaliser now and Langfield went up for a corner in the last minute. However out broke Hearts and it looked like Langfield was going to get back in time but Stevenson was bursting up the pitch. From just inside the box he fired into the net. It was game set and match and a bad day at the office for Aberdeen.
