The first half was a pretty even affair with chances at either end. The first real talking point of the game came in the first 5 minutes, when Johnny Hayes produced an excellent cross to the back post. Scott Vernon was there to collect the ball and have a shot, the shot that was going in was clealry prevented from doing so by a Dundee players arm, but the referee waved play on. Moments later Hayes picked up a long ball forward from Anderson, just inside the box. He turned and drove a shot in on goal only to see it go wide of the target. Dundee replied with pressure of their own as they mounted an attack on Langfield's goal. A high ball was played into the Aberdeen box headed away by osbourne, but only as far as Riley who struck a volley that looked as if it was dipping in bottom corner. Langfield was on the scene to save brilliantly. Then McGinn's moment of magic came, as he picked up the ball wide left in his own half. He cut inside beating two players and then from 30 yards had a shot that bounced just before the Dundee keeper and nestled in the bottom right of the net. A spectacular goal to say the least! Not much happened for the rest of the half until Jim McAllister for Dundee unleashed a volley inside the box, but it struck the cross bar and Aberdeen cleared to safety.
Dundee came out the better of the two teams in the second half as Aberdeen looked to have dropped off the pace a bit. It was all Dundee pressure without much actually being created and Aberdeen ere happy to soak it up. Aberdeen won a free kick 25 yards out, but McGinn could not match his first half accuracy and blazed over the Dundee bar. Several harmless shots were coming in from Dundee, Ryan Conroy was off balance as he tried a shot, sending it wide. No other clear cut chances were created from either side, Dundee still had the teritorial advantage but were finding it hard to actually trouble the Dons defence. Craig Brown would of been happy to hear the final whistle securing his first win of the year for Aberdeen.
