St Mirren v Aberdeen Match Report

A game in which Aberdeen dominated but did not have that cutting edge and killer instinct to finish their efforts on goal. The 0-0 scoreline has become all to familiar for Aberdeen this season and that exact scoreline yesterday made it a hat-trick of 0-0's for the Dons against St Mirren this season. The game was poor and both teams looked like their seasons were over. Both teams are now looking to build for next season as St Mirren secured their safety in the SPL last week.

Vernon has not been his usual goal threat for Aberdeen this season with only 6 goals for the campaign but he had the first effort on goal as he attempted to curl the ball into the top right hand corner of the net past Sampson after Jack neatly beat to players and layed the ball off to Vernon. St Mirren replied with a fantastic effort of their own. It came from a Dougie Imrie free kick that forced Langfield into a terrific stop. Soon after The ball popped out to Nueton at the edge of the box after a scruffy and untidy corner. He struck the ball sweetly and was on its way in but Langfield was equal to it and got himself behind the ball. Ten minutes later Aberdeen looked sure to score from McGinn's corner. The outswinging corner came right to Shaughnessy he seemed surprised the ball cam to him and he fluffed his header. That concluded the first half. Not a half of football for the history books for sure.

The opening chance of the second half fell to Vernon's head, or so he thought, but McCausland came out of nowhere to make a clearing header. Fantastic defending. Aberdeen were piling the pressure on th Saints defence and Jack almost made the break through after Vernon knocked down for Jack, he took it on the volley but was denied a goal by the outside of the post. Then the moment of controversy. Hayes was slipped through on goal by Vernon and cooly slotted into the bottom right hand corner of the net but it was not to be as the linesman had flagged for offside. Replays show that Hayes was miles onside as Van Zanten was playing him on. Extremely frustrating for the Dons. A more funny side to the match when Lewis Guy the substitute exchanged words with the Saints assisstant manager Tony Craig. Guy was immediately subbed and stormed down the tunnel. He'd obviously had enough of the game and felt the fans' pain.
