The first half was a lack luster half as the Dons were defending well but not really giving anything in the way of going forward. Aberdeen seemed to be reluctant to get in Celtic's faces and put them under pressure in the first half. The first chance of the game came in the way of a Joe Ledley shot, Brown layed the ball off to Ledley who powered through the Dons defence and drove a shot at goal, Langfield saved well and palmed the ball wide. The main talking point of the match came in the 43rd minute though. Mulgrew picked the ball up in Midfield and clipped a ball over the Aberdeen defence for Samaras to latch on to. That he did and Anderson failed to challenge the striker. Samaras took a poor touch as Langfield came rushing out and just managed to poke it off to the side of the keeper. However Langfield brought him down and a penalty was awarded. The ref sent Langfield off with a wry smile on his face. A face that many Dons fans would happily have punched at the time. Due to the red card Zola was taken off and making his debut for the Dons Nicky Weaver came on. Commons stepped up to take the penalty, he scuffed it and the ball rolled under weavers feet as the sub dived to his right but the ball went straight down the middle. The ref blew for halftime almost instantly after.
Aberdeen came out in the second half with a bit more confidence drilled into them even with ten men. But it was Celtic who got the first chance of the half. After a scramble in the box from the resulting corner the ball popped up to Samaras who went for the volley but fired the ball inches wide, much to the relief of the Aberdeen team. The next move came from Aberdeen and McGinn should of equalised. Hayes picked up the ball from Reynold wide left and floated a delicious ball into the box. McGinn found himself between two Celtic defenders and somehow still got to the ball, he powered his header towards goal but Forster was able to make the save. It should have been 1-1. Two more chances came and went for Celtic as Mulgrew went for glory himself with a curling effort and brown fluffed a shot on goal from just inside the box. Weaver was put to the test as he saved well from another Joe Ledley shot on goal. The Aberdeen defence parted and gave way to Ledley who drove into the space and let the shot go, Weaver was equal to it though. Aberdeen at this point were not really creating many clear cut chances as they have been over the last couple of weeks and were scampering to try and find a goal. This ended up being the cause for the second Celtic goal as Aberdeen pushed men forward the ball was played to Forrest out wide who sprinted up the wing, albeit Mark Reynold was keeping up with the pacey winger and the flukiest of goals took place from Forrest's shot. Reynolds went to block the ball with his foot and the ball spun up off his leg over Nicky Weaver who was standing in the six yard box and somehow dropped in the net behind him. You will never see another goal like it. After that there was no way Aberdeen could get back into the match with only 5 minutes to play.
Great credit once again has to go top the fans who turned up in their huge numbers. Great support guys, and we can only hope we can get a result at Tynecastle next Saturday
