Falkirk Bow Down To Dominant Dons

Aberdeen put in a terrific performance this evening to brush aside what could of been a tricky tie. The five goals that Aberdeen scored probably didn't even show the amount of possession and grasp that they had on the game.

The game started with both sides missing good chances Hayes was 1-on-1 with the Falkirk keeper but failed to finish. Falkirk then went up the other end and a great ball from Duffie out on the wide right put it on a plate for his team mate to finish. The ball looked to be heading in bottom corner but down dived Langfield to parry the ball away. The first goal came from Joe Shaughnessy in the 22nd minute. After a long period of Aberdeen stroking the ball about searching for an opening, it was a long throw in from Robertson that caused the problems for Falkirk. The ball found itself inside the box and it fell to Shaughnessy who convincingly thrashed the ball across the keeper in to the side netting of the goal. Calvin Zola was causing problems for the Bairns up front and undeservedly received a yellow card early on. He was still putting himself about and was risking the chance of getting a second yellow from referee Steve McLean. Derek McInnes did the sensible thing and substituted the big striker. On came Vernon. On thirty minutes Shaughnessy looked to double his goal tally as he latched on to a cross from Hayes. The contact wasn't clean but it had to be cleared off the line and to safety by the Falkirk defence. Hayes was a continuous thorn in the side for Falkirk all night and got his reward for setting up Cammy Smith on 35 minutes to lash home from close range. Aberdeen were now in full control of the match and Falkirk had dropped off the pace and didn't really look as if they believed they could come back from their current predicament. Derek McInnes went in at half time by far the happier of the two managers.

Half time did not stall Aberdeen's momentum as they came flying out the traps in the second half. Falkirk found themselves pinned back in their own half and just couldn't play. It was only a matter of time before Aberdeen fired home their third goal. Scott Vernon got his second goal in as many games from coming on as a substitute. Clark Robertson whipped the ball in and after a flick on Vernon slid in to meet the ball at the back post and slot home past McGovern. By now Aberdeen were rampant and the boys were queueing up to get a goal. Less than two minutes after Vernon's first goal he got a second. Cammy Smith cracked a shot in at goal from close range but was well saved by the keeper, however he could only parry into the path of Vernon who smashed the ball into the net. Aberdeen were four nil up and were looking almost at home on the artificial surface at Falkirk Stadium. The Dons were stroking the ball about with ease and shot after half chance came and rained down on the Falkirk goal. Vernon looked to have wrapped up his hat trick on the hour mark, but his header from the Hayes corner sailed inches wide. A wonderful jinking run from Pawlett followed. He picked the ball up on the left flank weaved in and out, beat several players and found himself at the bi line. Vaulks had other ideas in his mind and came across and smashed into Pawlett who went flying, the penalty was awarded. Up stepped Vernon and superbly finished into the top left hand corner of the goal. Vernon had his hat trick and now his confidence back. Th Falkirk players began to tire and had enough of what had been a miserable night for them. They began to commit foul after foul but that didn't stop Aberdeen creating more chances. It really should have been eight or nine as Low missed two good opportunities to find the back of the net.

A great game for Aberdeen which gives them their third win in a row and their fourth clean sheet on the trott. Aberdeen had the lions share of posession over the 90 minutes and had seventeen shots on goal compared to Falkirk's feeble three. The stats really do show the great display the boys in Red put in tonight. All seems well at Aberdeen and every single player is playing an important part in these decent results. Much credit has to be given to the 1000 strong Dons fans who were allowed to feast their eyes upon a dominant Dons performance.
