It was announced this morning that Caldwell, Dorrans, McArthur and Darren Fletcher had all withdrawn from the Scotland squad through injury. Now the former Aberdeen midfielder Gordon Strachan had a question on his hands, who would fill the boots of these men? Well the answer to that question is no more than Mark Reynolds and Peter Pawlett who if they play will gain their first full international cap, a tremendous achievement.
As the news filtered through not only the two Dons players would have been thrilled, but the majority of the Red Army would have let out a massive grin when they heard the news. It is great to see that the effort and commitment of both players throughout the season is being recognised and rewarded with an appearance on the international stage. No less than either player deserves. Now though Dons fans will be sitting watching the Scotland v Nigeria game on edge with their fingers and toes crossed neither player picks up an injury (touches wood).
Reynolds has been immense in defence for the Dons this season and Langfield can look no further than his central defenders to thank for his abundance of clean sheets. A stalwart at the heart of the Aberdeen defence is Mark Reynolds and there is no reason why he can't perform just so well in a Scotland jersey, however in blue he may not look so good. Peter Pawlett on the other hand has been the creative spark for us this season going forward and has lit up matches when it looked dark and gloomy with no goals forthcoming. His pace and drive breaks through central defences causing havock amongst the opposition teams which then leads to either Pawlett being frantically scythed down or bursting through on goal and showing the composure to finish. To prove this point eight goals for a Midfielder in all competitions is not a bad feat. There is no reason he cannot showcase his talents on the bigger stage.
Scotland v Nigera takes place on the 28th May, at Fulham's Craven Cottage with an 8pm Kick Off.
