Aberdeen Begin League Cup Defence Versus Livingston

Rooney steps up... a pin drop could be heard around the packed out Parkhead... he runs up... and SCORES!!

Moments like that you will never forget, and Aberdeen will be looking to re-create those special kinds of memories again this season. Tonight it all begins again from the start as we begin the defence of the League Cup with a home tie against Livingston. If Aberdeen are to lift the same silverware as last season it will be done in one less round as this season we come in a round later thanks to our successful 2013/14 campaign.

Many may think that this stage of the competition is a foregone conclusion, however it is far from that. Need I mention East Fife (I cringe with you) and last season when we only managed to beat Alloa 6-5 on penalties.

If you are a stats person then hold on tight. In each of the last three seasons the holders of the League Cup have been eliminated by lower league opposition in their first tie. Also we have drawn the West Lothian side on 7 occasions in cup competitions and won only twice. Now let's quickly move onto some promising statistics. We are unbeaten in our last six matches against Livingston winning four of those and not conceding a single goal across those six games.

McInnes has mentioned that he is not wanting to alter the team greatly but he will be forced to replace Niall McGinn who will miss out following an injury he picked up against Ross County. Clark Robertson and Russell Anderson are also still sidelined but with Ashton Taylor in at centre back there is not too much cause for concern.

I have to say that if we play like we did on Saturday with positive, direct, pacy play I can't see past us pushing into the next round. But all is to play for and over the years I have learned to hold my tongue when it comes to Aberdeen in cup competitions.
