Dons Win Last Minute Point In Enthralling Fir Park Match

Aberdeen scored in the last minute to come away with a well deserved point in the clash for second spot. Aberdeen dominated the game through large periods of the match and by the end of the game were unlucky not to be 5-2 up. The new signing of Rooney looked to prove a good one as he scored on his debut to give the Dons that boost they needed to come from behind. The point still sees the Dons sitting in that all important second position only a point ahead of Motherwell. It was vital Motherwell came away from the game with nothing more than a share of the spoils, and to that they were held.

The game started ferociously and was end to end stuff. Aberdeen had shown they could start games well this season and they were doing so again. It was Rooney with one of his first touches for the club, who was bundled over in the box just inside the ten minute mark. A real penalty claim for the Dons was waved away by referee McLean. It was another contentious decision that followed. Jack found himself just outside the Motherwell penalty box with the ball, before quickly shifting it across to considine, not before he could aggresively have been taken out the game by Hutchinson though. It was a real bad challenge despite getting some of the ball Jack was on the ground rolling around in agony and had to be stretchered off. A real blow for the Dons ahead pf the semi final, the Motherwell defender was lucky to be on the park! Paw;ett came on to replace Ryan Jack. Robson then hit the top of the net from the resulting free kick.

It was the Steelmens turn to then come forward. Good wing play by Francis-Angol allowed him to get a cross in to McFadden who's close range effort was well stopped by Langfield. It was becoming a real open game with both sets of teams attacking players getting a lot of freedom. It was Robson again ho had another effort at goal after robbing Carswell of the ball in midfield. He drove a low effort at goal, which beat the keeper but not the post. It struck the frame and flew away to safety. Directly before half time it was Hayes' turn to sting the palms of goal keeper Nielsen with a thunderous effort from the edge of the box. The keeper was equal to it and parried the ball to safety.

An early corner in the second half for Motherwell proved to be costly for the Dons who switched off. The ball was floated in and a great header from McManus flew past Langfield, very much a lapse of concentration from Aberdeen. The team in white then looked to respond instantly with their own corner, but after a scramble the ball was cleared off the line by Lasley. Aberdeen now had a very firm grip on the game and Shaughnessy knocked the ball down to McGinn at the back post following a brilliant Hayes cross. McGinn's shot was charged down by three Motherwell players desperately trying to keep the ball out. An hour had passed and still the Dons were not level. Shaughnessy latched on to another Hayes cross but he couldn't get any purchase on the ball to score as he slid in at the back post. Then came the equaliser. Rooney on his debut followed up a parried McGinn shot which fell kindly to the new signing, who calmly headed in.

However Aberdeen were only level for a matter of minutes, before Sutton managed to put Motherwell back in front. A driven cross from Anier into the six yard box allowed Sutton to tap home and get his team back in front. Extremely demoralising for Aberdeen who had worked so hard to get back in it. Rooney should of got his second goal of the afternoon about five minutes after Aberdeen fell behind. Pawlett dinked in a lovely ball into the box, but the striker couldn't get the ball under control and spooned it over the bar. One last chance however was given to Aberdeen as Motherwell conceded a corner inside the dying seconds. McGinn whipped it in and a mad scramble ensued. The ball bounced on the line and Anderson launched his whole body at the ball with the hint of a handball to draw Aberdeen level. Bedlam in the away end as the Dons fans went crazy!
